PhD and Master’s

Multiple PhD and Master’s positions in artificial intelligence for additive manufacturing:
We are seeking multiple PhD and Master’s applicants for our new R&D initiatives with industry. The current positions are mainly related to artificial intelligence (AI), in which analytical data-driven techniques based on recent breakthroughs in deep/machine learning as well classic AI (e.g., neural networks, fuzzy logics), combined with model-driven approaches will be applied to the big data collected during laser powder-bed fusion additive manufacturing (AM) processes. The output of the AI models will act as quality assurance algorithms and real-time and/or intermittent control of the process required for serial production. The data will be collected from optical thermography and photodiode sensors as well as intermittent images collected during the process.
The theme of the graduate projects will fall under the following aspects. The chosen students will be assigned to one or two themes depending on their qualifications and interests.

1) Development and enhancement of advanced continuous and process intermittent monitoring capabilities for characterizing process signatures, including: melt pool intensity and shape, spatters, and plasma plume;
2) Development of detection algorithms of process estimator to correlate signal outputs to actual defects;
3) Development of advanced continuous and process intermittent controllers to compensate for the defects such as: porous defects, delamination, and residual stress;
4) Development of intelligent platform for optimum data collection with minimum frequency without jeopardizing the richness of the dataset.

Candidates with mechatronics or electrical engineering degree are welcome to apply. It is expected that these positions will be filled for May and/or September 2020. In addition to regular graduate studies’ requirements dictated by the University of Waterloo, applicants to MSAM must have a minimum average of 85% and also have excellent background in AI and good understanding of AM.
Please send your CV to Professor Toyserkani at ehsan.toyserkani@uwaterloo.ca. In the subject of your email, please write “Applicant for AI-AM positions”. In the content, please indicate if you are seeking a Master’s or PhD position.

There is no position available in other areas at the moment.
Applicants interested in other areas may send their CV to Professor Toyserkani and/or Professor Vlasea; however, due to extensive number of applicants, they are not able to respond to your emails. Your applications will be filed and if a new position becomes available, they will contact you directly only if your background matches the position requirements. You are however encouraged to check this page on a regular basis to learn about upcoming PhD and MASc positions that might be available later in 2019. In addition to regular graduate studies’ requirements dictated by the University of Waterloo, applicants to MSAM must have a minimum average of 85% and also have excellent background in additive manufacturing.
